Oil filter modification for biodiesel–fueled engine: A pathway to lubricant sustainability and exhaust emissions reduction
نویسندگان
چکیده
The widespread use of biodiesel in internal combustion engines promotes frequent lubricant drain intervals which in turn affects lubricant sustainability and engine performance. In this research two endurance tests were carried out to evaluate the novel approach of strong base oil filter with palm biodiesel (PME) fueled single-cylinder diesel engine. The effects of strong base filter on lubricant rheology, piston ring/cylinder wear losses, engine performance and exhaust emissions were investigated. The results of long duration engine testing showed that the strong base filter improved the lubricant’s physical and tribological characteristics. Tribo-testing, using high stroke reciprocating test rig, proved that the mechanical energy losses due to piston ring-cylinder interaction were reduced significantly. Finally, the engine performance and exhaust emissions analysis for strong base filter testing showed an improvement in engine performance, average decrease of 2.78% in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, 7.18% reduction in hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and 3.3% reduction in smoke opacity at full load engine conditions. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Biodiesel is an alternative diesel fuel that can be produced from different kinds of vegetable oils. It is an oxygenated, non-toxic, sulphur-free, biodegradable, and renewable fuel and can be used in diesel engines without significant modification. However, the performance, emissions and combustion characteristics will be different for the same biodiesel used in different types of engine. In th...

The methyl esters of vegetable oils, known as biodiesel are becoming increasingly popular because of their low environmental impact and potential as a green alternative fuel for diesel engine and they would not require significant modification of existing engine hardware. Methyl ester of Fish oil (FME) is derived through transesterification process. Experimental investigations have been carried...

Vehicle Emission is one of the main causes of environmental damage. Vehicle engines produce carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon (HC), Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and many other harmful substances. An investigation was conducted using a compression-ignition engine fuelled with different ratios of blends of diesel and biodiesel at different EGR rates. The effects of different ratios of fuel blends and EG...
